Starting Mediumship: Four Foundations for Beginners
By Danielle The Happy Medium™
When you are starting mediumship development, it can feel as though everyone has a different answer about what you should do first. In my YouTube teaching, I come back to four foundations. My advice is to understand how you work, make room for sitting in the power, find teaching that makes sense to you and take your time.
1. Understand how you work
My first tip is connection. Before worrying about how quickly other people receive information, begin to understand your own way of working. In my teaching, that means learning how you direct your attention towards the spirit world and recognising the impressions you experience. If you do not understand your own process, it is easy to become confused by somebody else's.
Ask yourself what you actually notice during practice. Are you aware of images, feelings or a sense of knowing? What changes when you settle into the exercise? Understanding your own experience gives you something specific to discuss with your tutor, rather than trying to copy another medium's presentation.
2. Make time for sitting in the power
Sitting in the power is the second foundation I recommend. I use it within my development teaching as time to become more familiar with yourself and your awareness. It is a practice to explore patiently, rather than another performance you have to get right.
In the video, I explain why I place particular value on this in the early stages. The point is to give yourself space to learn. Do not judge every sitting by whether you received a striking impression. Becoming familiar with your own mind is part of the work.
3. Choose teaching that you can follow consistently
Different teachers explain mediumship in different ways. Taking on several methods at once can leave you unsure which instructions you are trying to follow. My advice is to find a teacher whose explanations and approach make sense to you, then give yourself enough time to understand that method.
When choosing support, consider whether you communicate well together and whether the teacher works in a way you want to learn. Consistency helps you build understanding. You can still ask questions and decide whether the teaching remains a good fit.
4. Give yourself time
Mediumship development is not a race. I often compare the foundations to building a house: if the ground is unstable, it is harder to build securely on top. Rushing ahead can mean returning later to the basics you skipped.
Focus on understanding your connection and practice before comparing yourself with a demonstrator or another student. In my approach, patience is part of development itself. Someone else's pace does not tell you what your own progress should look like.

Watch the original video below, then choose one foundation to reflect on this week. Which part do you already practise, and which would benefit from more attention? You do not have to change everything at once.
