The Clair Range in Mediumship Development

Updated: Aug 7

Mediumship teachers often use French-derived “clair” terms to describe different kinds of inner impressions. They are part of spiritual-development language, not scientifically proven extra senses.

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance means “clear seeing”. In practice, a student may experience an inner image, symbol, colour or memory-like scene. This is usually described as mental imagery rather than physically seeing something with the eyes.

Clairaudience

Clairaudience means “clear hearing”. A practitioner may describe an inner word, name, phrase or piece of music. It should not automatically be treated as an unquestionable instruction.

If you hear voices as though they are external, feel distressed or are told to harm yourself or somebody else, seek help from a qualified health professional rather than assuming the cause is mediumship.

Clairsentience

Clairsentience means “clear feeling”. Students may notice an emotion, atmosphere or body sensation. Physical symptoms still require ordinary attention and appropriate medical advice.

Claircognisance

Claircognisance means “clear knowing”: an impression that seems to arrive without a visible chain of reasoning. Confidence is not evidence, so the information still needs to be checked within the reading.

Clairalience and clairgustance

These terms refer to impressions of smell and taste. Check practical explanations first. Persistent unexplained smells or tastes can have medical or environmental causes.

Developing discernment

Do not treat every thought, image or sensation as spirit communication. Record the impression before interpreting it, ask for further evidence and notice what the recipient genuinely understands.

The aim is not to predict the future or produce “profound truths”. It is to communicate specific information carefully and honestly.
