Past Lives and Reincarnation: Belief, Memory and Evidence

Reincarnation is the belief that some aspect of a person continues into another life. It is important in several religious and philosophical traditions, although those traditions do not all teach the same thing.
Reincarnation has not been established as scientific fact.
Déjà vu
Déjà vu is the feeling that a new situation has happened before. It is common and is studied in relation to memory and familiarity processes in the brain. Experiencing déjà vu does not prove a past life.
Dreams and apparent memories
A vivid dream or mental scene can feel convincing without being a literal memory. Imagination, forgotten information, suggestion and ordinary memory errors can all shape an experience.

Interests and strong preferences
Being fascinated by a country, culture or period of history is not evidence that somebody lived there before. Interests can develop through books, films, family influence, education and personality.

Fears and phobias
A fear does not need a past-life explanation. Phobias can develop through learning, experience and other psychological processes. Effective professional treatments are available.
Past-life regression uses suggestion and imagination and can create memories that feel real but are inaccurate. It should not be treated as a reliable method of recovering historical facts or identifying a cause of trauma.
A responsible spiritual approach
People may explore reincarnation as a belief, meditation subject or personal story. Keep the language honest, avoid presenting impressions as verified biography and do not use them to replace healthcare or make major decisions.
